Chiefs Are Guilty Of The Galamsey Menace
The issue of illegal mining in Ghana which is popularly referred to as ‘galamsey’ has been a major threat, not only to human lives as a result of the chemicals used in the extraction of the minerals.
The activity also has an impact on the environment and river bodies in areas where these minerals are extracted, contaminating them and making them unsafe for use.
This has become a major problem hanging on the neck of the country, with leaders pointing accusing fingers at each other.
While some accuse politicians of engaging in the activity, others blame citizens who engage in the practice for exacerbating the problem.
But some, including the Founder of the Gift of God Worship Ministry, Apostle Phillip McCallister have blamed traditional rulers for being the originators of the problem, as according to him, as custodians of the land, it is the traditional authorities who release lands for the galamseyers to operate.
According to him, nobody, irrespective of that person’s religious, or ethnic background, social or educational status, or political affiliation can just go on any land and begin to dig for gold or any mineral without recourse to the traditional ruler of that area.
He pointed out that the problems posed by the activities of galamsey should, first of all, be blamed on the doorstep of traditional rulers before any other person or group.
He has therefore charged traditional authorities to lead the fight against the practice, as they are the major cause of the problem.
