The Kaneshie District Court in Accra has granted the request for a bench warrant for the arrest of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Hon. Francis Xavier-Sosu.
The MP in the past month has been chased by the Police after he led a demonstration in his constituency over the poor states of roads.
On November 8, 2021, when he was expected to make the first appearance in court, he did not show up as he was out of the country on official business.
Expected to appear in court for the third time today, November 29, over charges of unlawfully blocking a public road as well as the destruction of public property, Hon. Francis Xavier-Sosu failed to show up once again.
In his absence, his lawyer Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu said he is on the Constitutional and Legal Committee of Parliament and they are sitting on the Anti-Gay bill.
He argued that the Madina MP is a ranking member of that Committee and with that exercise coming up this morning, means he is on Parliamentary duty.
On the part of the prosecution, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvester Asare said the conduct of the MP gives a clear indication that he does not want to appear before the court.
Making his case with reference to Sections 167 of Act 30, ASP Asare prayed the court to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the lawmaker.
His Worship Oheneba Kuffour who presided over the case today after hearing both sides granted the request for the bench warrant for the arrest from Francis Xavier-Sosu.
Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to January 12, 2022.
