Energy  Minister Touts The Benefits of LPG In West Africa

The LPG industry presents an attractive solution to leverage the shift to cleaner energy sources while promoting Africa’s industrialization agenda, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Ghanaian Minister of Energy, has said.

He said it will take the collective efforts from academia, the industry, and the government to prudently push West Africa to maximize the economic gains across the entire LPG value chain.

The Minister of Energy reiterated the government’s determination to ensure that at least 50% of Ghanaians have access to LPG by the year 2030 as part of contributions towards climate change mitigation through the introduction of the National LPG Promotion Programme( NLPGPP).

Dr. Opoku Prempeh said, “considering the evolving nature of the energy landscape, Ghana is very keen on ensuring at least 50% access to LPG by the year 2030 as part of contributions toward climate change mitigation hence the introduction of the NLPGPP. The NLPGPP is an improvement of the erstwhile Rural LPG Promotion Programme(RNLPGPP) with an additional focus on commercial and industrial use.”

Speaking at the 3rd West Africa LPG Conference and Expo in Accra, he said, the utilization of LPG as household fuel had been expanding in several countries in West Africa since the early 1990s.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh however said the average per capita consumption in the region remains low by international standards.

LPG consumption, he said, could be significantly increased in the region as part of measures to combat climate change by reducing emissions.

The 3-day conference and Expo is aimed at reaching a consensus on making LPG available at an attractive price in West African markets and attracting the requisite investments for LPG storage and distribution infrastructure.

The conference which was held in Ghana for the first was on the theme: “Towards Making LPG the Clean Fuel of West Africa.”

The conference has proven to be a credible mouthpiece in promoting new perspectives and fresh thinking in improving LPG access to consumers as clean and affordable energy.
