Feminism Is Never a Western Culture – Ms. Aseye Tamaklo
The Director of a Historic Documentary Film, When Women Speak, Ms. Aseye Tamaklo of the University of Ghana has asserted sternly that feminism as has been perceived by many is never a Western Culture.
She said issues of gender inequality are common among women all over the world, including Ghanaian women and so there was a need for women activists to struggle for gender equity.
Ms. Aseye Tamaklo made these assertions at a one-day workshop organized for female journalists in Accra on 15th August 2023 by ABANTU for Development on the documentary film.
She noted that the main aim of coming out with the film is to debunk the perception that the struggle for gender equity is a Western phenomenon.
The film director added that the film was to address issues raised by women and made them legitimate.
On her part, a producer of the film, Prof. Kate Skinner of Bristol University UK, stressed the need to engage young women in gender struggles for them to understand what affirmative action was.

She stated further that the team would engage female students in both Senior High Schools and Tertiary Institutions in Ghana as a way of sensitizing them on how to stand for their right.
Meanwhile, participants at the workshop (journalists) also expressed that feminism is not a man-hating or a man – witch hunting issue and advised young women activist groups to stand for their rights but not witch-hunt men.
