Ghana Card Applicants Threaten To Demonstrate Against NIA

…Over Delay In Issuance Of Card

Some applicants of the Ghana Card have threatened to embark on a massive demonstration against the National Identification Authority (NIA) in the Agona West Municipality over what they say is a deliberate attempt by the Authority to deny them their legitimate nationality identification by refusing to issue them their Ghana Card.

According to the aggrieved applicants who spoke to CapitalNewsOnline of their intended planned demonstration, they have applied for the card for almost a year now, since April 2022, but the NIA has continuously refused to issue them their cards on the premise that there is a shortage of materials used in printing the cards.

According to the aggrieved applicants, reliable information available to them indicates that some people who recently applied have received their cards after paying money.

Some also say they suspect the denial is an attempt by the NIA to deprive some people of the opportunity to vote in the upcoming 2024 general elections, as the Ghana Card would be the sole requirement for every eligible voter during the elections, according to the Electoral Commission.

Currently, the card has been the main requirement by many institutions such as Health Insurance, Banks, the Ghana Revenue Authority, Educational Institutions, and Telecommunication providers for the processing of documents and transactions of a business.

Though no date was announced for the demonstration, the aggrieved applicants disclosed that they are giving the NIA some time to remedy the situation, or they will hit the streets.
