MTN Updates Parliament Committee on Major Network Upgrade

Parliamentary Select Committee

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications visited MTN Ghana’s Head Office in Accra to assess the network performance and the measures being taken to enhance its services nationwide.

During the visit, Madam Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, addressed the parliamentarians. She explained that the purpose of the meeting was to demonstrate MTN’s efforts in managing and monitoring its network.

“We engaged with Parliament a few weeks ago, and they inquired about our network performance and the steps we are taking to improve it.

We thought it prudent to bring them into our Network Operation Center to showcase the work we are doing to enhance service delivery for our customers,” Wiafe stated.

Madam Wiafe highlighted that MTN Ghana is currently undertaking a major network upgrade, which involves replacing old equipment with new, advanced technology.

“This upgrade is currently being carried out in Greater Accra, and we are proceeding cluster by cluster. Given the scale of this project, we have experienced some network connectivity issues over the past two weeks. However, we are actively resolving these issues,” she noted.

She expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Once all the new equipment is in place, we expect a significant improvement in the quality of our service delivery.”

Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications also seized the opportunity to discuss with the company how to make internet data affordable to the public of Ghana.

“I believe the NCA has addressed the subject of why we have some of the data pricing. They have also talked about how low our prices are in the sub-region,” he further explained. “They also talked about the declaration of MTN Ghana as a significant market player, which means that our data prices have to be higher than our competitors.

“I think the NCA also explained why we have the data structure the way it is, and that is to improve competition. Those are some public interest reasons why this is the situation,” she added.

The visit underscores the collaborative efforts between MTN Ghana and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications to ensure reliable and enhanced telecommunications services across the country.
