The former Member of Parliament for Nadowli Kaleo and a Leading Member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has been elected as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
The NDC nominee for the Speaker position beat his contender Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye who was then Speaker of Parliament. Mr. Sumana Bagbin was the Second Deputy Speaker in the 7th Parliament.
The NDC in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and copied to the Capitalnewsonline.com presented the Nadowli MP to lead the 8th Parliament.
According to the NDC, the decision was arrived during a Functional Executive Committee meeting of the National Democratic Congress on Tuesday, 5th January 2021.
The NDC put up Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, MP for Nadowli, for the position of Speaker of Parliament of the 8th Parliament, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) proposed Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye who served as Speaker for the 7th Parliament; 2017 to 2021.
However, there was some level of disagreements that characterized the election during the night of which brought in the Police and Military personnel into the parliamentary chamber.
In another, the issue of allowing the MP-elect for Assin North, Richard Quayson who was to have a court injunction being granted to bar him from holding himself out as the MP was also solved.
During the counting of the ballots, the Member of Parliament for Tema West and former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry in a video footage walked to the table and snatched the uncounted ballots.
The Chief Whip on the NDC side and MP for Asawase, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak and some of his colleagues on the NDC side went after him and secured the ballots.
