Data Analyst Calls For Forensic Investigation Into 2020 Presidential Results

Dr. Justice Moses Aheto, a Member of the opposition National Democratic Congress election collation team has called for a forensic investigation into the results of the December, 7 presidential elections.

Dr. Aheto who is also a lecturer at the University of Ghana with expertise in data analysis said the forensic investigation was crucial in order to know the true outcome of the disputed election that has triggered unprecedented debate among political parties, civil society organizations, the clergy, and politically exposed personalities. The true outcome of the just-ended election, he adds, would also lower the political tension in the country.

This, he said, can be done with the Electoral Commission leading the process by holding a round table discussion to subject its figures churned out to public scrutiny as a prelude to the forensic investigation into presidential results.

He appealed to the EC to heed to his call in order to redeem its battered image as a result of the controversial December 9 presidential results declaration by Jean Mensa.

Speaking at a forum organized by the Political pressure group, Respect My Vote Movement (RMVM) in Accra, he said, the votes cast by the citizens of Ghana in the Parliamentary and Presidential elections must be respected. Dr. Aheto was scandalized that, the EC Chair, Jean Mensa had changed election figures more than five times between 9th and 10th December 2020.

The matter, he said, has raised grave concern by both local and international observer missions who observed the just-ended election.

The changing of presidential results on five occasions according to him has created a credibility crisis for the EC and threatened the peace and political stability of the country.

Dr. Aheto said the EC Chair first declared 13,434,574 as the total votes cast and later changed it to 13,121,111, 13,562,573, 13,433,573, 13,119,460 with varied degree of confusion as to which of the declared figures represent the actual figure of ballots cast on December 7th, 2020 election.

He said the uncertainty about which of the figures bundled around by the EC represents the true electoral results cast a slur on the electoral commission image.

The Director of Elections of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Elvis Afriye Ankrah urged the NDC supporters and sympathizers to resist oppressors rule as enshrined in the 1992 constitution.

He said, “we are in a country where people preach peace yet do not respect the fundamental human rights of the citizens.”

The abuse of citizens’ rights according to him can trigger tensions and chaos. The Member of Parliament elect for Tamale Central constituency Hon. Mutala Mohammed Ibrahim was appalled that President Akufo-Addo did not deem it fit to visit and console the bereaved family of persons who were killed defending their legitimate rights during the just-ended election.

He asked persons who are stampeding NDC to go to court if there are dissatisfied with the outcome of the just-ended election to desist from such practice, saying the party would go to court at the appropriate time.

He was not happy that the EC made clerical errors in the election and do not want to be criticized yet it was bold to disqualified presidential candidates for minor errors.

Former Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Nana Oye asked why a president who is believed to be a human rights activist has the penchant to subvert the will of the people of Ghana.
