Ghanaian giants, Asante Kotoko suffered a 2-1 defeat to ES Setif when they hosted the Algerian club at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Nicknamed the Porcupine Warriors, the club based in Kumasi today played host to the North African club in the first leg of the clash in the final playoff round to the group stage of this year’s CAF Confederations Cup competition.
On the matchday, both teams opened up play and gave it their all in the first half in search of an equalizer to have the advantage.
Unfortunately for both teams, they did not create the needed clear cut chances and settled for a draw at the end of the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Asante Kotoko had a strong start and dominated the opponent as a result. With cheers from the supporters at the match venue, the players pushed on until they had the breakthrough in the 69th minute.
Striker Kwame Opoku latched onto a pass from Emmanuel Gyamfi and cooly slotted his effort into the back of the ES Setif net.
With the advantage, it looked like Asante Kotoko could go on to win at the end of the 90 minutes.
But for two goals from Amoura Mohammed and Kendouci Mohammed ES Setif impressively turned around the match to win 2-1 at the end of the game.
With the result, Asante Kotoko risk elimination from the competition and will need to overturn today’s defeat when they travel to Algeria next weekend for the reverse fixture.
