WinWASH: Empower Women to Tackle Water, Sanitation Challenges Amid Climate Change
As the world observes Climate Change and Green Economy Week, the Women in WASH Advocacy Network (WinWASH) has made a clarion call for gender-responsive climate action, highlighting the disproportionate impact that climate change has on women and children.
WinWASH also expressed deep concern over the worsening effects of climate change on vulnerable communities, particularly the escalation of water scarcity, compromised sanitation systems, and increased health risks.
These impacts are most severely felt by women in rural areas who are on the front lines of water collection and sanitation management.
“Climate change is not just an environmental issue—it is a gender issue,” the statement read. WinWASH urged governments, development partners, NGOs, and private sector actors to invest in climate-resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure and ensure that women’s voices are central in decision-making.
The advocacy group stressed that empowering women in climate resilience efforts is crucial to achieving a fair and sustainable green economy transition.

By promoting practices like the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in WASH operations, WinWASH insists that climate solutions must combine environmental sustainability with social justice. Prioritizing women’s leadership and equitable access to safe water and sanitation are essential in building resilient communities that protect both people and the planet.
In a world where climate change continues to disrupt necessities, WinWASH is calling for immediate, collective action to secure a future that upholds gender equality and community well-being at its core.
