MTN Ghana has officially handed over 3,888 hospital beds and accessories to seven health facilities across the country as part of the climax of its 2026 Y’ello Care campaign, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and improving patient care.
The handover ceremony, held at Achimota Hospital in Accra, marked the conclusion of the company’s annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care employee volunteer initiative, which this year was held under the theme
This year’s campaign executed in partnership with Sika pƐ Adjuma, was held under the theme “Expanding Equitable Healthcare for Every Community,” with MTN employees focusing on repairing broken hospital equipment instead of replacing it, thereby extending the lifespan of critical healthcare assets while reducing waste.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Wiafe, said the programme forms part of the company’s employee volunteer initiative, where staff go into communities to support development efforts beyond their core work.
She explained that the 2026 edition focused on addressing the “no-bed syndrome” in hospitals by supporting healthcare facilities with beds and accessories to improve emergency and general healthcare delivery.
“We started this programme at the beginning of the month. Every June, MTN staff volunteer in communities to get closer to society and contribute directly to the wellbeing of people,” she said.
Ms. Wiafe noted that staff worked within hospitals to repair broken beds and accessories as part of a sustainability drive aimed at reducing waste and extending the lifespan of medical equipment.
“This year, staff went into hospitals, took broken beds and accessories, repaired them, and returned them for reuse. It is part of our sustainability agenda to ensure we reduce waste and conserve resources,” she said.
She added that the initiative also responds to urgent social needs, stressing that healthcare remains a priority area where corporate support is critical.
“Life is about people, and when people need support, it is important for us as MTN to step in and respond to those priorities,” she stated.
According to her, the initiative delivered about 3,888 beds and accessories, including bedside lockers, drip stands, and other furniture, which have already been deployed to hospitals to support patient care.
Ms. Wiafe further explained that the intervention was implemented with the support of artisans, healthcare workers, and partner institutions who guided the refurbishment process.
“We are grateful to all our partners, healthcare providers, hospitals, and artisans who supported and guided us through this journey,” she said.
She also urged other organisations to support similar initiatives, noting that healthcare is a shared responsibility and individuals may one day need the same system they are helping to build.
She highlighted that the programme is part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations, describing it as a reflection of the company’s commitment to giving back to society.
The beneficiary health facilities include Achimota Hospital, Mamobi General Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital, Keta Municipal Hospital, Upper West Regional Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Medical Superintendent of Achimota Hospital, Dr. Jacqueline Anita Sowah, described the donation as timely and impactful, saying it would significantly improve patient care and help ease the long-standing shortage of hospital beds.
She said the donated beds, mattresses, bedside lockers, patient chairs, and other equipment would enhance patient comfort, strengthen service delivery, and reduce pressure on the hospital’s limited resources.
Dr. Sowah noted that demand for healthcare services at Achimota Hospital continues to grow, revealing that the facility recorded 207,673 outpatient visits, nearly 6,000 inpatient admissions, over 14,500 antenatal care visits, and 1,690 deliveries last year.
Despite these achievements, she said the hospital still faces major infrastructure challenges, including the need for an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), additional theatre space, more anaesthesia machines and patient monitors, and rehabilitation of the deteriorating access road to the facility.
She appealed to government, corporate organisations, development partners, and philanthropists to support the hospital in addressing these critical needs.
Dr. Sowah also announced that Achimota Hospital will celebrate its centenary in 2027 and expressed hope that partners such as the MTN Ghana Foundation would continue supporting its growth and development.
Adding a stakeholder perspective, Charles Darko Prempeh, Founder of Sika p3 Adjumah, described the initiative as a “dream come true,” saying it began as a conversation that evolved into a major healthcare intervention.
He said MTN Ghana engaged volunteers across the seven beneficiary hospitals, where teams supported the sourcing, assembly, and refurbishment of beds and accessories used for the project.
He commended MTN Ghana for involving local partners and volunteers, describing the initiative as a strong example of collaboration and community impact, and urged continued maintenance culture to sustain the gains of the project.
The Head of Sales and Marketing of DOSH Health Insurance, Ms. Belinda Amoo, said the company partnered with MTN Ghana under the Y’ello Care initiative to support patients who are unable to pay their medical bills.

She explained that DOSH Health Insurance provided coverage support valued at about GH¢1 million for the seven beneficiary health institutions, aimed at helping patients settle inpatient bills and access continued medical care even after discharge.
Ms. Amoo added that the insurance package is designed not only to cover hospital bills but also to provide ongoing health support for beneficiaries within the coverage period, ensuring sustained access to healthcare services.
She noted that the initiative reflects DOSH Health Insurance’s commitment to expanding access to affordable healthcare and supporting vulnerable patients across the country.
The 2026 Y’ello Care campaign forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader corporate social investment programme aimed at improving healthcare, education, and community development across the country.
