Ghana’s efforts to expand liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage to 50 percent of households by 2030 received a significant boost with the commissioning of a 40,000 cubic metre LPG vessel, ‘Asharami Ghana’, owned by Nigerian energy and infrastructure giant Sahara Group.
The vessel was officially commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama during a side activity of his trip to South Korea.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama described the vessel as a “major milestone in strengthening the infrastructure that underpins the regional LPG supply chain,” emphasizing that increased shipping capacity is critical for ensuring reliable and efficient supply for Ghana and its landlocked neighbors.
He commended Sahara Group, WAGL Energy, and other partners for their “leadership, technical expertise, and strategic foresight,” highlighting the project as a model of cross-border collaboration in the energy sector. President Mahama expressed confidence that MT Asharami Ghana would inspire further investment and innovation across Africa’s energy industry.
The new vessel enhances Ghana’s clean energy supply chain, supporting both domestic consumption and regional LPG trade in West Africa. It improves logistics efficiency, ensures supply reliability, and reinforces Ghana’s role in delivering cleaner energy solutions.
According to Wale Ajibade, Executive Director of Sahara Group, the vessel is part of a broader regional strategy for clean energy development. “MT Asharami Ghana is more than a vessel; it is a strategic move to strengthen LPG supply security and support Ghana’s clean energy ambitions,” he said.
The vessel adds 25,000 metric tonnes of LPG stock security to Ghana, complementing a 6,000-metric-tonne land storage facility in Tema, with plans to expand to 12,000 metric tonnes.

Sahara Group now operates a fleet of six LPG carriers with a combined capacity of 202,000 cubic metres, and an additional 270,000 cubic metres of capacity is under construction, expected for delivery by September 2028.
Temitope Shonubi, Executive Director of Sahara Group, noted the development of the Tema land-based LPG storage terminal to support domestic needs while facilitating regional distribution.
